What is Lingt?

Lingt is a site that allows your instructor to create assignments that require you to type or speak your responses. We hope that, by supplementing the usual reading and writing assignments with Lingt's media-rich spoken assignments, you'll come away from class with a much better grasp of the material.

Accessing your teacher's assignments.

Accessing your teacher's classes and assignments is as easy as going to lingtlanguage.com/your-teacher's-username. Your teacher should have given you his or her username when assigning a Lingt assignment.

Completing an assignment.

The first thing you should do when accessing an assignment is give Lingt permission to access your computer's microphone. You will be prompted to do this the first time you take a Lingt assignment and never again after that. Just be sure to check 'remember' or things won't work correctly.

To complete an assignment, simply provide responses to the empty talk bubbles (see next question) and fill in text-boxes with text. When done, press the "submit" button at below the assignment. Just give the digital equivalent of a signature, hit "submit," and you're done. By the way, we only ask for your email so we can streamline teacher feedback to your submission. We promise not to give it away or spam you.

Using the record bubble.

The record bubble is Lingt's widget-of-choice for recording your voice. Once you've tried it a couple of times, it will be perfectly natural. Click the bubble once to start recording - make sure you don't start talking until the loading animation disappears. Click the bubble again to listen to the sample you just recorded. If you want, you can redo a submission by clicking the little "x" in the upper right corner of the bubble when you hover over it. Easy.

Configuring your microphone.

Most of the time, Flash will automatically detect the correct microphone and you can begin recording without a problem. However, sometimes you will need to manually tell Flash to use a microphone other than the default. To do this, click "Choose Mic" in the upper right corner of the screen when you are taking an assignment. You can choose a new microphone from the drop-down menu and check the audio bar on the left of the Flash box to see if your voice is being detected. Unfortunately, all the record bubbles must be reloaded when you change mics, so the page will refresh when you do so. We hate doing it this way and promise to take care of it soon.

FAQ

What do I need to use Lingt?

Since Lingt is an entirely online service, our technical requirements are very easy to meet. In fact, you probably already meet them:

  • Flash 9 or above.
  • Lingt works best in Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox 2+, and Safari, but other browsers may work as well. Lingt also works in Internet Explorer 6 - just barely.
  • A microphone. This can be external or built-in to your computer.
  • If you have internet filtering or a firewall in place you may need to make modifications. Specifically, RTMP communication over port 443 to lingt.com is required to play and record audio.

Why can't I record my voice?

Students often have trouble recording their voice because of microphone troubles, or connection trouble.

Assuming that you have allowed Flash access to your microphone when Lingt prompted you the first time you accessed the site, a hardware or operating system problem may be preventing you from recording your voice. Click "Microphone" in the top-right corner of the screen to try choosing another microphone. If this doesn't fix your problem, consult your operating system or audio driver documentation to make sure your hardware and operating system are configured correctly.

If the voice bubble spins forever, this is likely because your computer can't access lingt.com's audio server because of internet filtering or firewall restrictions. You need to permit access for Lingt Classroom's audio services to work. More details are available here.

What if I still can't record my voice?

If your microphone is setup, but you're still having trouble recording you voice and you notice the voice bubbles 'spin' forever, you're likely having a connection problem. This is often because of internet filtering or firewall restrictions that inadvertant block access to Lingt's audio servers. You need to permit access for Lingt Classroom's audio services to work. More details are available here.

Can I type in a foreign language?

Yes. Lingt doesn't currently offer any method to help you do so (we're working on it), but you can submit responses typed in any language.

Why do I have to enter my name and email after every assignment?

In order to make using Lingt as painless a process for you as possible, we don't require you to sign up for an account with us. Unfortunately, this means we can't really track any of your information from session to session. The compromise is that you simply type your name at the end of every assignment so your teacher knows who submitted. In addition, we take your email to allow your teacher to send you feedback on your submissions very quickly.

Can I complete an assignment twice?

Yes. If for any reason you want to do so, you can submit multiple times. Your teacher will be able to view every submission.

Can I save my progress and continue working later?

Unfortunately, no. Since we don't make you sign up for an account, we can't associate the assignment with you.
